Teacher’s Pet offers the opportunity for teenagers who have experienced abuse, neglect, or homelessness to work alongside shelter dogs and form bonds that help both humans and animals heal.

Many of the youth who participate in the program have reported feeling more confident, connected to their community, and motivated to make positive changes in their lives. Meanwhile, the dogs get to experience new environments, socialize with humans and other dogs, and become more adoptable.

18 Years of the Human-Animal Bond: Healing Critically At-Risk Youth and Shelter Dogs Together

For the past 18 years, Teacher’s Pet programs have aimed at healing at-risk youth and shelter dogs has been making a difference in our community. The program offers the opportunity for teenagers who have experienced abuse, neglect, or homelessness to work alongside shelter dogs and form bonds that help both humans and animals heal. It provides a safe space for at-risk youth to learn life skills and to help shelter dogs become more adoptable by giving them the opportunity to socialize with humans.

The results of the program have been remarkable. Many of the youth who participate in the program have reported feeling more confident, connected to their community, and motivated to make positive changes in their lives. Meanwhile, the dogs get to experience new environments, socialize with humans and other dogs, and become more adoptable.

Over the past 18 years, the program has helped thousands of at-risk youth and dogs find healing and connection through the human-animal bond. It is a testament to the transformative power of this bond and a reminder of the good that can come from investing in the lives of both animals and humans.
